Halstead Farm

Halstead Farm is a double storey Provence style farmhouse built just before the turn of the 20th century when the Sundays River valley came into prominence as a citrus growing region. Sir Percy Fitzpatrick, author of the South African classic tale Jock of the Bushveld pioneered the citrus development in the valley by bringing water, via canal system, to this fertile region. On many occasions he and other of the valleys early pioneers would use the vantage of the double story balcony to view the expanding agricultural developments of those early years. While the main house today remains our residence we have opened the guest cottages to visitors. The central position of Halstead has proved to be a useful springboard to explore the valley The Sundays River Valley is typical of many farming communities with various farm stalls, polo club, library etc. The Lookout burial site of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick has the most wonderful viewing platform built over 50 years ago from where an elevated perspective of the whole expanse of the valley can be gained.

Hillston Farm Cottage

Hillston Farm is a working farm in the Middelburg district situated in the northernmost part of the Eastern Cape. There is something magical about the vast semi-desert region known simply as the Karoo. Despite its frequent droughts and extremes of climate, the Karoo nurtures life in great abundance and its plains teem with animals of every description. After the seasonal rains the recovery of the veld is miraculous frogs chorus in full throat and a carpet of brilliant flowers spreads dramatically over the once barren wasteland. To the passing motorist who has been driving in the heat for hour upon hour, its desolation and aridity seem harsh indeed. But to those who have been captivated by its fierce beauty, the Karoo is a place unlike any other. Joan Southey, Footprints in the Karoo Break-away from the hustle and bustle of city life to the beautiful malaria-free Eastern Karoo. At Hillston Farm youll experience South African hospitality with a difference - farm style with a touch of class. Beautiful views, excellent photography, scenic hiking trails, more than 100 species of bird life including the rare Blue Korhaan, shearing shed tours (a former English Barracks in the Anglo-Boer War), and much more.

Kinmel Guest Farm & Lodge

Breathe, hike, fish, play, relax... Enjoy peace, tranquility, breathtaking beauty and spectacular views of mountain peaks and valley gorges. This is just a taste of what Kinmel Guest Farm & Lodge has to offer. Summer views offers the splendour of cascading waterfalls and lush green mountain sides in contrast with the magnificent colours of autumn, pitch-black perfect night skies, and picturesque pure white snow-covered mountains. At the foot of the Naudes Nek Mountain pass, this piece of paradise is perfectly situated in the Southern Drakensberg, a mere 1.5 km outside the historic village of Rhodes. We offer self-catering or bed and breakfast accommodation to our guests who will have the benefit of a farm-style stay in modern, spacious, well equipped accommodation, yet we are still very close to the amenities Rhodes has to offer. Enjoy invigorating hikes in the surrounding mountains, swim in the river or play in the rock pools, go fly-fishing, walking, birdwatching and mountain biking. Savour the scenery on our many 4x4 trails, enjoy a leisurely picnic beneath the willows down by the river, or you can simply put your feet up, relax and enjoy the splendour which the Southern Drakensberg has to offer. Wild rainbow trout swimming side by side with elusive yellow fish abound in the Bell River, making it a fly-fishermans paradise. Kinmel has its own stretch of the Bell River, specifically reserved for our guests only. The region also boasts a number of dams and more than 200 km of rivers and crystal clear running water in which to cast your fly. Relax in the old sheep shearing barn that has been converted into two comfortable, fully equipped chalets with a rustic enchantment Or if just need to take a break from the Drakensberg dirt roads... Kinmel Lodge offers you modern, luxurious, comfortable en-suite rooms with a queen size double bed. Wake up to a hearty breakfast, fresh air and spectacular views We also are a fully functional active farm where guests and especially children are invited to acquaint themselves with a variety of farm animals. We fully support the principles of eco-tourism, defined as responsible travel to natural areas, which conserves the environment and improves the welfare of the local inhabitants. In addition, this area was once home to South Africas first people, the San, as is evidenced by the many rock art sites - these can be viewed by appointment. From December to February our wild flowers are truly beautiful and the area also boasts the highest navigable mountain pass in South Africa, the Naudes Nek Pass.
